At DaSegna, every Hermès piece we stock has passed our in-house authentication check. But whether you're shopping with us or elsewhere, knowing what to look for protects your investment. Here's how to tell a genuine Hermès scarf from a fake.
1. Feel the Silk First
Authentic Hermès scarves whether a 90cm carré or a slimmer twilly are crafted from 100% spun silk, sourced and woven in Lyon, France. The fabric should feel substantial, almost heavy for its size, with a natural lustre. If it feels light, slippery or synthetic, walk away.
2. Inspect the Hand-Rolled Edges
Every genuine Hermès carré and twilly is finished by hand. Run your finger along the hem you should feel a neat, consistent roll stitched with a single thread that matches the dominant border colour. Machine stitched edges are a red flag. On twillys, the rolled edge is narrower but no less precise.
3. Check Print Registration and Colour Depth
Hermès prints are screen printed with extraordinary precision sometimes up to 40 individual colours. Hold the scarf up to natural light. Colours should be crisp with no bleeding, smudging or misalignment at the edges of motifs. The reverse side of the silk should show the print faintly but clearly, not as a blurry ghost.
4. Find the Signature
Look for "Hermès Paris" woven or printed within the design not on a sewn-in label alone. On carré scarves this usually appears discreetly within the border or corner motif. The font is clean and consistent. Misspellings, inconsistent spacing or a signature only on the care label are warning signs.
5. Read the Care Label
Authentic scarves carry a small sewn-in label, typically in one corner, that reads "Hermès Paris Made in France" along with fabric content. Since the 1990s, a unique design name and colourway are also included. Labels should be sewn on three sides only, with one open end never heat-pressed or fully sewn shut.
6. Packaging and Provenance
Original orange boxes and ribbons are desirable, but their absence doesn't indicate a fake many preloved pieces circulate without original packaging. However, a seller who cannot name the design (every Hermès scarf has a named print, such as Brides de Gala or Jungle Love) should raise questions.
